La etapa de este sábado, con salida en Loveland y llegada a Fort Collins, con una distancia de 185,4 kilómetros estuvo caracterizada por una fuga de 15 hombres, de la cual hicieron parte notables como Michael Rogers, Andrew Talansky, Fabio Duarte del Team Colombia, Thomas Dekker, Bruno Pires entre otros, los que no representaban ningún riesgo para la clasificación general final mirando los puestos de vanguardia.

Sin embargo, los hombres del Cannondale comenzaron su trabajo para el descuento de la diferencia y a partir de los últimos 50 kilómetros, poco a poco su labor fue dando resultados, colocándose a 40 kilómetros de la llegada a 1:40. Cuando faltaban 30 kmts, el reloj marcaba 1:25 en favor de los fugitivos  pero en un fuerte columpio a 25 kmts, la fuga se rompió y el alemán Gesche se fue al ataque mientras un trio integrado por Machado, Carlsen y Duarte persiguieron al puntero pero más adelante, aparecieron 5 al comando: Megias, Rogers, Dekker, Edmonson y Gesche los que decidieron jugarse a fondo por la etapa, mientras quedaban como persecutores sus 11 compañeros de aventura hasta ese momento.

A 20 kmts de la llegada, la fracción tenía en punta solamente a 4 pedalistas-pues Gesche perdió contacto en otro corto pero fuerte ascenso-, los que se reafirman en punta con el lote circulando a 1:20, dando alcance a quienes habían estado en la fuga del día y entonces la carrera quedó limitada al duelo de los 5 encabezados por Michael Rogers y el lote dirigido siempre por los Cannondale.

Michael Rogers (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff), Thomas Dekker (Garmin-Sharp), Joshua Edmondson (Sky) y Javier Megias (United HealthCare) se presentaron a 10 kmts de la meta con solo 35 segundos a su favor, siempre perseguidos encarnizadamente por los Cannondale y hasta Jarlinson Pantano del Team Colombia aceleró la marcha en el lote en uno de los últimos columpios que presentó el sinuoso recorrido. Todo hacía prever la conexión entre los punteros y el lote líder, para forzar una llegada masiva donde el gran favorito era una vez más Peter Sagan.

Antes de ser cazados en los últimos 5 kilómetros Michael Rogers y Megias intentaron irse solos a la meta y dejaron a sus otros dos compañeros pero el lote ya los tenía en la mira y finalmente se produjo la cacería cuando faltaban 4 kmts para dar paso a lo previsto, esto es, embalaje imperial con la victoria de Peter Sagan sobre Luka Mezgec, Greg van Avermaet y Edwin Avila del Team Colombia, en un brillante cuarto lugar en el remate y mostrando que hay un nuevo velocista para el futuro en el ciclismo colombiano, mientras su compañero Robinson Chalapud intentó la victoria a 1.500 mts de la llegada pero eso le valió más bien para ser décimo de la etapa.

La clasificación general no sufrió modificaciones y el norteamericano Tejay van Garderen (BMC-Racing) conserva su camiseta de líder faltando solamente el Circuito final en Denver para subir al podio por la camiseta de campeón, mientras verá a la derecha a su compañero de equipo, el suizo Thomas Frank y a su izquierda a Tom Danielson (Garmin-Sharp), con el colombiano Jánier Acevedo en la cuarta plaza, honrando el bien ganado prestigio del ciclismo de su país.

La última fracción tiene un total de 75.8 kms y tiene como epicentro a Denver, en el circuito de la victoria para todos los sobrevivientes de la gran carrera norteamericana.
